An industrial design is the appearance of a product or a part of it: its lines, contours, colours, shape, texture, materials or ornamentation. Designs most often registered include labels, fabric patterns, packaging, bottles, bags, the look of appliances and tools, kits or sets of products, furnishings, etc.
The rights to a registered industrial design in Ukraine are certified by a certificate. It is valid for 5 years from the date the application is filed with the national intellectual property office. The term can be renewed for further 5-year periods, up to 25 years in total from the filing date.

A design is protected if it is new and has individual character.
A design is new if no identical design was made public before the filing date (or the priority date, if priority is claimed). It has individual character if the overall impression it makes on an informed user differs from the impression made by any design made public before.
Features of a product dictated solely by its technical function are not protected.
Registering an industrial design takes 4–6 months under the standard procedure, or 1.5–2 months under the accelerated one.
The cost depends on the complexity of the product and the number of designs in the application; government fees are paid separately.
